Nuenen is set in the middle of beautiful woodland and lovely rural landscapes. The surroundings were an inspiration to Vincent van Gogh when he lived in Nuenen between 1883 and 1885. He could already draw well but had done very little painting. It took months of practice before Vincent produced his world famous painting 'The Potato Eaters'.
Many of the sources of this inspiration still remain. In some ways Nuenen is an 'outdoor museum' with plenty of attractive locations, large and small houses, trees and small squares. No fewer then 21 buildings and rural scenes are directly associated with van Gogh's stay here.
He produced over 500 drawings and paintings here; a quarter of his total work!
