In the heart of the city stands the first and oldest Philips factory (1891). Here you can see how light-bulbs used to be made over one hundred years ago. A visit to this original factory is a journey back in time. You will visit the factory floor, much of which is still in working order, complete with central drive shaft for the machines. Here you can almost feel what it was like to be a 19th century factory worker, with a demonstration of how light-bulbs used to be made adding to the ambiance. It is possibly the only place in the world where you can still see how this was done, a process very modern in its day. Your guide is a former Philips employee.
Suggested additional programme:
The building that houses the first Philips factory is also home to the Artificial Light in Art Centre.
The changing exhibitions here show sulptures, paintings, objects and other (modern) art-works all with the central theme of artificial light! A visit to this intriguing museum can be perfectly combined with a trip to the Philips factory
