At first glance it is hard to imagine that the Eindhoven you see before you is actually one of the Netherlands’ oldest cities. In 1232 Hertog Hendrik I granted city status to the walled citadel of ‘Endehoven’, which is known to have been inhabited since the 7th century. The production of textiles, tobacco and matches were the beginnings of the city’s industrial development. In 1891 the Philips brothers set up business in Eindhoven and in 1928 the Van Doorne brothers laid the foundations of what has become DAF. These were the main developments that resulted in an enormous industrial growth, boosting Eindhoven to become the dynamic and prominent city it is today.
